Puff pastry toppings

Puff Pastry is in my eyes an absolute gem. It is so easy to prepare (you roll it out and stick it in the oven) and you can get so creative with the toppings! Great to serve at a braai and a dinner party! They can be served hot or cold.

First: The puff pastry! If you have had it in the freezer, take it out and let it thaw. They thaw very quickly.

Next: Roll the pastry out and open the sides so that you have one big piece. Pop it into the oven but watch carefully as the pastry cooks quickly.

Then decide on the toppings. I spread tomato relish (from Woolies) over one and then topped it with baby tomatoes. I popped it back in the oven for a few minutes until the tomatoes were grilled and soft. Then once it is cool, top with mixed herbs like rocket, basil and parsley. Pour over some balsamic vinegar. Delicious.

Another idea is to spread cream cheese over the pastry (melt it slightly so that it spreads easily and does not break the pastry), throw over some salmon pieces.


Get creative and top your puff pastry with whatever tickles your fancy. Some ideas are:

  • Mushrooms and onions
  • Feta cheese
  • Mozarella cheese
  • Tuna
  • Cream cheese and sweet chilli sauce
  • Sundried tomatoes and olives
  • Asparagus

And the list goes on and on! It is up to you really – have fun and enjoy!
